We are currently accepting resumes for the full-time Payroll Clerk position located in Whitehorse, YT.

Duties:

  • Ensure the correct and consistent application of Northwestel’s collective agreement, management policies and applicable legislation including Canada Pension, Employment Insurance, tax laws (federal, territorial, & provincial), and labour laws for payroll processing.
  • Establish payroll records for employees and prepare appropriate documentation. Interface with the Human Resources Department to ensure that payroll records are current and correct.
  • Collect, process, and verify payroll data including but not limited to: time sheets, manual cheques, adjustments, and retro pay using a computerized payroll system.
  • Perform manual calculations of pay and appropriate deductions when required and reconcile discrepancies when detected.
  • Answer inquiries regarding payroll issues on a timely basis. Provide clear explanation of calculations, reconcile pay or deduction disputes and respond in a tactful and diplomatic manner.
  • Maintain records for overtime and vacation time.
  • Identify and analyze payroll discrepancies and develop and propose appropriate solutions to eliminate those discrepancies.
  • Maintain internal controls and documents related to payroll procedures.
  • Process expense claims, corporate card statements and employee advances. Ensures all expense claims, advances and corporate card submissions are properly authorized and adhere to company policies. Answers employee queries about the status of their expense claims.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements

 

  1. A Certificate in Business Administration.
  2. Completion of three of the required courses in the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) program.
  3. One-year recent work experience in a payroll department for a unionized workforce.
  4. A strong knowledge of Part III of the Canada Labour Code, applicable rules relating to source deductions (e.g., CPP, EI, Workers’ Compensation, Income Tax, etc), and relevant Income Tax/Goods and Services Tax legislation.
  5. Minimum one-year accounting experience in a medium to large company with a strong knowledge of accounting and business practices and procedures.
  6. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel including the ability to create and maintain spreadsheet macros.
  7. Strong math skills with the ability to perform and reconcile moderately complex calculations.
  8. Strong interpersonal skills.
  9. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  10. The ability to maintain the confidentiality of payroll records and related information.
  11. As part of the recruitment process for this position, candidates may be required to take
